I'm very pleased to be a part of this program. If you look , you can see a very tired photographer with his hat on trying to keep his eyes open and doing his best to crack a smile.
Redeye’s Lightbox is an intensive year-long course, which launches the careers of professional photographers through workshops, networking sessions and support from experts in the photography industry.
The course encourages collaborative working methods and participants work towards exhibiting at an international arts festival on completion of the programme. This year’s group mentors are; Thomas Dukes, Curator at Open Eye Gallery, Nicola Shipley, Director of Grain Photography Hub and Kate Jesson Curator at Manchester Art Gallery. The participating photographers are selected through an application process and are hand-picked by a panel of arts professionals. This year’s panel consisted of Andy Adams (FlakPhoto), Karin Bareman (Autograph ABP), Ying Tan (Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art) and Paul Herrmann (Redeye). Redeye seeks photographers with a high standard of photography and a desire to experiment and push their practice further whilst having an openness to collaboration.
Last week we welcomed our new group of Lightbox photographers who had the chance to share their work with each other for the first time. Over the course of the weekend, the group were joined by leading experts who offered inspiration, workshops and gave advice for the course ahead of them.
On Friday our Director Paul Herrmann kicked off the weekend with introductions and an overview of what Lightbox is all about and what to expect alongside Fiona Yaron Field of Uncertain States who gave the group an insight into collectives and collaborative working. On the Saturday Company of Mind offered tips on how to recognise challenges, generate ideas and work productively. On Sunday Lightbox mentors Nichola Shipley of Grain Photography Hub and Kate Jessen, Curator at Manchester Art Gallery led an open discussion on project management, building partnerships with arts organisations and other artists. Redeye's Charlie Booth helped the group to understand the importance of evaluation and in the afternoon Sarah Gee of Hyper Island in Manchester closed the weekend with a workshop on marketing and communications.

The Zhiyun-Tech Crane v2 is a 3-axis handheld gimbal stabilizer offering 360° rotation along all three axes. It offers button-powered, continuous rotation along the pan axis, and manual, non-stop circular rotation along the tilt and roll axes.
The Crane is designed for DSLR and mirrorless cameras weighing up to 3.9 lb, such as the Sony a7S and Panasonic GH4, and includes an attachable lens support for long lenses. The Crane features three 32-bit MCUs (motor control units) running in parallel at 4000 Hz, and has a stepless joystick at your fingertips that allows switching between different modes. Cameras attach by securing a simple thumbscrew without any tools, and full setup can be achieved within a minute.
A 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole on the bottom also allows use with monopods and various other support equipment. The Crane can also be controlled wirelessly from an iOS/Android app (available from Zhiyun-Tech) via a built-in Bluetooth connection to your phone. The Crane runs on and comes with two 26500 batteries, which feature a 12-18 hour runtime.

LBM Was asked to produce a promotional film for The University of Liverpool that would promote the unique architecture, sculpture and other key built environments on campus. The brief was very open but our project manager emphasised to highlight how staff and students can take for granted the rich landscape in their everyday activities.

LBM has been working with students and parents over the half term school holidays to produce polaroid emulsion lifts.
These are great 1st time efforts. There is no right or wrong way to produce these fine art prints, each time you produce one it will be totally unique.

This session offered tailor-made feedback sessions for funding proposals in progress in a friendly, supportive environment. Participants were invited to bring copies of a proposal they are working on. Each proposal was examined and suggestions made to improve chances of success.
Dodge the Shredder is widely considered to be the leading workshop of its kind in the UK. For Redeye, the workshop included information tailor-made for lens-based artists working in photography, artists' film and video.
Emilia Telese
Emilia Telese is an award-winning artist, writer and academic. A graduate of the 600-year-old Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, living in the UK since 1997, her practice spans several art forms, from interactive and body-responsive technology, film and live art to installation and public art. She has exhibited worldwide since 1994, including at Ars Electronica, ZKM, Venice Biennale, the Louvre, Paris and the Freud Museum, London. A former Arts Council of England Regional member, Emilia is passionate about the financial sustainability of artists' work. She is a specialist in professional practice for artists, lecturing and speaking at over 30 UK and European art institutions and organisations. She is a CDA AHRC PhD researcher in Cultural Policy at the University of Loughborough in partnership with a-n The Artists Information Company, looking at the economic value of artists in the UK economy.

The Invisible City was a unique cinematic event staged in St Helens. LBM was on hand to document the main event. A collaboration with Abandon Normal Devices (AND) and Alexandra Park (St Helens) Management Limited, the former Pilkington Glass headquarters. Featuring the granddaddy of surveillance films Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. This short film acts as an archive to the installation, delivery and wrap up of the large outdoor screen operation. The main event consisted of a film programme, with a choice of viewing options including ‘drive-in’ and ‘viewing gallery’; and quasi-fictional tours of the Pilkington HQ, which flattened distinctions between famous and forgotten, public and private spaces in the building. The glass fronted office complex was used as a backdrop to ask questions related to transparency and invisibility in our society today.
As you know I have been photographing and filming a variety of locations, workers and monuments on site to develop a body of work that is part installation, part documentary. The events curated by Heart of Glass for the film screenings hosted on the same site have allowed me to make new connections, re-visit old ones and establish some links for potential collaboration between a new, but rapidly growing arts institution in the St Helens area.
I have begun to photograph and film the inner workings, remains and archives of the old Pilkingtons Glass HQ (currently Alexandra Business Park) in St Helens.
The site is a vast complex filled with historical rooms, objects and varied artefacts of by gone eras. The site is also a working office space (in parts) for NHS, Game Designers, local businesses and charities who reside in the ‘Shell’ of the listed/dated brutalist architecture and 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s to present day décor.
It is my intention to publish a book and create an installation for exhibition that relates to the historical/current impact and legacy of the Pilkington ‘Empire’. I also will investigate what contributed to its fall from grace, discover what remains there are and how the site will fare in the future.
I would like to photograph and interview any ex members of staff/workers and record their stories and hopefully create a form of digital archive of people’s history with the site. It is also my intention to collaborate with other creatives, musicians, writers and artists to create a body of work which contributes to the final publication and exhibition.

As stated in previous blog and social media posts LBM has begun to photograph and film the inner workings, remains and archives of the old Pilkingtons Glass HQ (Currently Alexandra Business Park) in St Helens.
The site is a vast complex, filled with historical rooms, objects and varied artefacts of by gone eras, but it is also a working office space (in parts) for NHS, game designers, local businesses and charities who reside in the 'Shell' of the grade 2 listed complex of brutalist architecture and it's 1960's-80's decor.
Because the site is so vast, rich in history and has many hidden aspects to it, it is intended to be an ongoing video and photography project with a view to exhibit and publish work(s).
LBM were also involved in a series of filming, screenings and facilitating performances for a weekend of surveillance themed and related events 'The Invisible City' Produced by Heart Of Glass in collaboration with Abandon Normal Devices (AND) and Alexandra Business Park (St Helens). The screen - shot (above) is illustrating the final part of the edit, colour grading and LUT applications. The film will be finished and online soon.

Earlier this year LBM was asked to Photograph Opera singer Roy Weissensteiner record his second studio album at Parr St Recording Studios in Liverpool. Here is a little video of the photographs edited to one of the featured tracks "Caro Mio Ben".
Here is a little video that our learners have made. The video consists of all of their photographs taken while light painting with the PixelStick (available to hire). They have pieced together all of their multiple photographs to create a stop frame animation movie. Very impressed that a class of mixed ability were able to learn basic video and create a short edit in a x 1 day session.
A few examples of some of the imagery created by college students that LBM has been teaching. This session(s) is all about light painting but learners also are gaining an understanding in how to create the correct exposure using shutter speed, aperture and ISO to produce an image in low light level conditions.
In the next session our learners will learn to create a short animated film, using video editing techniques to create a 'stop frame motion' movie with their photographs.
